Strengthening Our DDoS Protection to Keep Elections Available

At Simply Voting, availability is essential. Elections must remain accessible to voters, even in the face of deliberate attempts to disrupt them. One of the most common ways attackers try to interfere with online services is through Denial of Service (DoS) or Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which attempt to overwhelm systems with excessive traffic.

As these attacks have grown larger and more automated across the internet, we recently upgraded our DDoS protection to further strengthen the reliability of our platform.

What Is a DDoS Attack?

A DDoS attack floods a website or service with large volumes of traffic in an attempt to make it unavailable to legitimate users. These attacks can come from many sources at once and can scale very quickly.

For online elections, even brief disruptions are unacceptable. That is why DDoS protection must work automatically and at internet scale.

Our Previous Protection

In the past, Simply Voting used a DDoS protection system that could respond to attacks by redirecting traffic to specialized filtering systems when needed. This approach was effective and helped protect elections during periods of elevated risk.

However, it also relied on switching traffic paths during an attack, which adds complexity at exactly the moment when simplicity matters most.

Our New, Always-On Protection

We have now moved to a newer DDoS protection service provided by our hosting partner, Hut 8 High Performance Computing. It is built on carrier-grade DDoS protection technology from NETSCOUT Arbor. Arbor’s systems are widely used by internet service providers and large enterprises to protect critical online services against large-scale attacks.

Instead of reacting to an attack after it has already begun to affect our systems, traffic is continuously monitored and filtered before it ever reaches our servers. Malicious traffic is blocked automatically, while legitimate voters continue to access the platform normally.

This approach provides several important benefits:

  • Always-on protection
The system is active at all times and does not require manual action during an attack.
  • Early blocking of attack traffic
Harmful traffic is stopped before it can interfere with our infrastructure.
  • No reliance on traffic redirection
Protection does not depend on switching services or changing configurations during an incident.
  • Full coverage
All of our internet-facing systems are protected, not just specific endpoints.

Why This Matters for Elections

Elections have predictable timelines and high visibility, which can make them attractive targets for disruption. Our updated approach reduces the risk of outages during critical voting periods and simplifies how attacks are handled behind the scenes.

Most importantly, it helps ensure that voters can access the system when it matters most.

Part of a Broader Security Approach

DDoS protection is one part of Simply Voting’s broader security and reliability strategy. We combine network-level protections with monitoring, access controls, and operational safeguards designed to protect both availability and election integrity.

We continually review and improve these measures as technology and threats evolve.

Introducing a New Feature: Un-finalization

Simply Voting is committed to provide an easy and flexible election manager to allow all election organisers to set up smooth stress free elections. With the objective of always improving our services and offer, we are happy to announce the launch of a new feature: Un-finalization.

We understand that finalizing your election can be stressful as last-minute changes might come up. Whether it is to accommodate a last-minute candidate, to fix a typo or to modify your electors list. Flexibility is the key to ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the voting process.

That is why we are introducing the new feature: “un-finalization”, which allows you to call-off your finalization in order to make the necessary changes to your election. Once the changes are made, you will be able to re-finalize the election at no additional cost if you still have the same number of electors. If you added electors, you will be offered to pay for an upgrade.

To learn more about this new functionality and how to use it, please visit our help guide or visit our help portal

With this new functionality, managing your elections becomes easier, more efficient and more stress free than ever.

Simply Voting remains committed to enhancing its platform with tools that support seamless election management. The new un-finalization feature is part of our ongoing efforts to provide election organizers with maximum control and adaptability throughout the process.

This update reflects our dedication to listening to client needs and addressing the challenges that come with managing elections. We understand the importance of delivering a reliable system that empowers organizers to handle their elections with confidence. As we continue to innovate, we remain focused on making elections easier, more efficient, and stress-free for all.

Giving Back: 2023 Charitable Donations

Our mission at Simply Voting has always been providing affordable, secure, trustworthy, and efficient e-democracy solutions for the thousands of organizations we serve. We also understand that companies like our own can have a positive impact on the world around us and particularly our local community.

Every year we survey our staff for potential charitable organizations that continue to make a difference in our community and the world, and internally we run our own secret ballot to determine where our charitable focus will go.

We are pleased to announce that for 2023, Simply Voting has made $15,000 charitable donations to each of the following organizations:

Centre de Prévention du Suicide de Montréal (CPSM)

With the belief that suicide is preventable, Centre de Prévention du Suicide de Montréal (CPSM)’s mission is to help prevent it through greater access to information, quality services, and resources. They provide direct support to those who are lonely, depressed and contemplating suicide. They also assist those left behind by suicide including the family, the individual’s social network, and others.

CPSM provides prevention measures, such as education, awareness, and strategies towards prevention; provides a 24/7 telephone helpline and digital intervention line; and provides postvention to support recovery and healing.

Simply Voting at the 2023 AMCTO Conference

Every year the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) organizes an annual conference.

The 2023 AMCTO conference is a unique opportunity for municipal professionals, key vendors and suppliers, and special guests to attend. It’s the place to exchange new ideas, and explore important topics, such as internet voting for Ontario municipalities!

Known as ‘The Municipal Experts’, AMCTO offers a breadth of expertise and knowledge through year-round education and professional development programming. Also, through our members across a range of municipal operation areas and legislative issues. They are recognized as an influential voice for local government professionals regarding key management and legislative issues affecting the sector.

Simply Voting is attending the 2023 AMCTO conference, which is taking place June 11-14 in Niagara Falls! We’re looking forward to having some great discussions with municipal staff and leaders from across the province. Drop by and speak with us at booth #44!

As a trusted provider of secure and transparent online voting solutions, Simply Voting is dedicated to empowering municipalities with the tools they need to run efficient, inclusive, and reliable elections. The AMCTO conference provides the perfect platform to showcase how our technology can streamline voting processes, enhance accessibility, and build public confidence in electoral outcomes. Let’s work together to shape the future of voting!

In 2022, Simply Voting proudly helped 50 municipalities deliver successful elections driven by internet voting, and we can’t wait to help deliver many more come 2026!

Giving Back: 2023 Volunteering

At Simply Voting, we understand that companies can and should do more to have a positive impact on the world around them and the communities in which they exist. In addition to annual donations to charitable organizations voted upon by our staff, we seek to directly impact our local community in Montreal with volunteering efforts as well.

This year we partnered with Tree Canada, a national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments. Our mission: help beautify and “green” a local elementary schoolyard with ten trees to ensure young students could benefit from shade coverage.

So on a comfortably warm Friday our staff took time out of their workday, and with tools in hand and water bottles at the ready, we did just that! We worked in teams, taking on specific roles to make our work efficient. Along the way, our staff learned about several nuances around planting and caring for trees, and overall we embraced and matched the passion from our partners.

combined full tree

While we were tired and sore after hours of planting, and in between desperate dreams of ice cream, we could see how the literal sweat and effort would make a lasting addition to the schoolyard for generations of students. Our staff live nearby so we will see firsthand how the trees grow and take root.

We would like to thank Tree Canada for being an excellent partner and helping assist Simply Voting to make a positive impact in our community, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Tree Canada in the future.

Setting User Permissions with Roles

Finding ways to enhance customer experience is always a driving force at Simply Voting, and because of this we are pleased to announce our new Roles feature for streamlining user permissions.

Accounts on Simply Voting often have multiple organizational users, since managing elections sometimes isn’t just a one person job, or other stakeholders might be involved in helping keep elections transparent and auditable. If you are still sharing a single user login among organizational staff – we would encourage you to review best practices and create individual users (click here to learn more)!

To facilitate managing multiple users, we’ve launched roles. Roles provide a set of permissions which can be applied to multiple users, and to get you started you will find several default roles reflecting popular groups of user permissions.

Customers also have the option to create their own more nuanced roles (click here to learn more). For instance, a “scrutineer” role might have permissions related to read-only access to the Electors, Results, and Reports sections, but no access to any other sections within an election.

Any edits to the defined permissions for custom roles like this, such as say updating the scrutineer role to also include full access to the Account Log section, would then update the permissions of all users assigned to this role – saving you the headache of updating each user one by one and ensuring everything is the same across the board for the group of users.

We hope this feature enhancement helps keep your user management simple! Don’t hesitate to contact Support if you have any issues, questions, or concerns.

2022 Holiday Support Hours Schedule

Limited Support Availability

During this time, a skeleton staff will be available to assist customers. While general inquiries may experience some delays, we remain committed to supporting urgent issues.

For emergency support, please submit a request through our support form and set the priority to “Emergency”—one of our team members will respond as soon as possible.

Plan Ahead

To ensure uninterrupted service, we encourage customers to address any critical support needs before December 26. If you anticipate requiring assistance over the holidays, please reach out to our team in advance.

Protecting Your User Account: Two-Factor Authentication

In today’s world, data security is paramount. Protecting your organization’s data wherever it may be is a critical element of any organization’s security practices and policies. And when it comes to voting events and elections run on Simply Voting, security goes hand-in-hand with election integrity.

What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA), put simply, is an added layer of security that can be enabled by users on your organization’s account. Two-factor is shown to significantly decrease the risk of an account breach by combining two forms of protection — something ideally only you should know (e.g. your username and password) with something only you have available (e.g. your mobile device). Simply Voting supports two-factor authentication through any number of reliable authenticator applications.

Enabling Two-Factor Authentication on your User Account

The handy Election Manager Guide’s Account Management section covers how to enable and disable two-factor authentication. To enable it, you’ll need your mobile device. Then Simply log into your account as you normally would, and proceed to the Security section of your account. Locate the Two-Factor Authentication section and follow the instructions provided. Once completed, you will see a notice that your account is protected.

Logging into the Election Manager with Two-Factor Authentication

When you attempt to log into the Election Manager tool, you’ll use your username and password just like before. After that step, you’ll also be prompted to complete a secondary login element related to two-factor authentication, as shown in the screenshot below and in this FAQ item in our Help section.

Security Check-up

Finally, while in the Security section, take a moment do a security check-up on your password as well. Are you using it with any other website? Is it sufficiently secure? Are your security questions up-to-date? When in doubt, take those extra steps to help protect both your account and the integrity of your voting events and elections on Simply Voting.
